Thursday June 16, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury celebrated the completion of the new outdoor Fitness Court at Prien Lake Park, located at 3700 Prien Lake Road in Lake Charles. The open-air wellness area was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and is now available for residents to begin a new fitness journey.

The new Fitness Court is roughly 38-foot-by-38-foot, and all of the equipment challenges users to leverage their own body weight. There are different levels of resistance depending on what angle a person chooses to work out. There is a total of 7 exercise stations and it takes about 45 seconds to complete each one, with a 15-second cooldown in between each workout area. The whole Fitness Court can be completed in 7 minutes, with the entire workout reportedly helping you burn more calories per minute than a lot of other forms of exercise.

The Prien Lake Park Fitness Court actually has its own app and it's free. Look for the Fitness Court app in IOS or Google Play and download it to keep up with your workout routine, and get new workouts on a regular basis specifically designed for the outdoor facility. Dean Kelly, Facility Management Director said of the new park equipment and said, “This is a great addition to our park system.” Dean said, “We believe it will serve as a fun way to challenge yourself, your friends, and your community to get outside and get active.”

Police Jury Vice President, Anthony Bartie said “On behalf of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, I’m excited to open this new Fitness Court for our residents to enjoy. He continued “The Police Jury is dedicated to improving the health of Calcasieu residents and is extremely pleased to have this equipment featured at one of our beautiful parks.”

The new workout equipment was partially funded with a $30,000 grant from the National Fitness Campaign. The Prien Lake Park outdoor equipment isn't the first of its kind. The U.S. gets a ton of active fitness courts like this annually for parks across the country.
