Today Is International Mud Day – I Think We’re Ready To Celebrate

It's a word that comes up in every political campaign. It's something you don't want your name to be. It's something that you should never track into the house. It's fun to drive your four-wheeler through it. It's expensive when you have it applied in a spa. It's quite often a child's very first creative outlet. It is mud.

Today is International Mud Day: You're probably thinking why in the heck would we celebrate mud? Well back in 2009 at a world forum event a presenter from Australia and a presenter from Nepal were discussing ways to bring we, the citizens of the Earth, together as a people. They began to discuss what was common in every corner of the world and they soon found themselves talking about mud.

If you want to celebrate International Mud Day you'd better be ready to get dirty. The concept is to get into the mud and become one with it. Whether you're making mud pies, mud sculptures, drawing in the mud, or simply getting it all over you it's about becoming one with the Earth. What better way to get to know the planet than to wear it?

Noted botanist, inventor, and thinker Luther Burbank said of mud,

Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers,water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud turtles, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb. Brooks to wade…bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to toll, sand, snakes and hornets; any child who has been deprives of these has been deprived of the best part of…education.

Today might be the one day to allow things to get dirty where you are. To let your children and yourself return to a more simple lifestyle where computers and cellphones aren't needed, only imagination.
