Another drug bust on the interstate and the Sheriff's Office takes it off the street.

Yesterday at approximately 7:00 a.m., CPSO Sgt. Jeff Cole with the C.A.T. Team stopped a rental car traveling east on I-10 for a traffic violation near the 27 mile marker. The driver of the car, Phillip Helton, Jr., 31, 1136 Robinson Avenue, Marrero, Louisiana, told Sgt. Cole he was traveling back to his home from Texas.

After Helton began to act suspiciously during the traffic stop, Sgt. Cole asked for permission to search the car and he refused. Basco, a CPSO K-9alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the car. After searching the car, Sgt. Cole located approximately 20 pounds of marijuana in the cargo area of the SUV, with an estimated street value of over $44,000.

Helton was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
