Hurricane Laura and Delta really did a job on the trees around the state park. Many of them were damaged and had to be removed.

Park officials are asking for park-goers and SWLA residents who would like to help replenish the park with new trees to show up in force. The plan is to plant over 5,000 new trees.

KPLC spoke with Assistant Secretary of State Parks Brandon Burris last summer and the original plan was to reopen the park was at the end of 2021. He recently told them that the cause for delay has been the pandemic, rising construction costs, and delivery issues.

Burris says the wait will be worth it. He told KPLC that they are upgrading every aspect of the park. They will be adding new and modern electric and sewage hookups to their camper sites and they have built newly redesigned cabins.
