Head Coach Matt Viator who is currently in the middle of his eighth season as the head coach of the McNeese Football program received a big honor yesterday.

Coach Viator has been named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award which honors the nation's top head coach in the Football Championship Subdivision or FCS.

For the third time in his eight-year career as head coach of McNeese State, Matt Viator has been named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award as the nation's top head coach in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) announced by the Sports Network on Tuesday.

Viator and Southeastern Louisiana head coach Ron Roberts are the only two coaches from the Southland Conference to be listed on the 20-person final ballot.

Viator was also named a finalist in the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

The McNeese State football program are 9-2 on the year and 5-1 in Southland Conference play.  They jumped three spots in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches' Top 25 polls this week, moving to from ninth No. 6 in the Sports Network and ranked jumping from 11th to No. 8 in the coaches' poll. Now you can see why coach Viator has been named a finalist after the season he has put together this year.

McNeese will close out the regular season on Saturday at Lamar in Beaumont at 6:00 p.m.
