Well it's official, SWLA is getting a medical marijuana pharmacy.

If your remember our previous story, "Is Lake Charles Ready For Medical Marijuana?", we reported that 10 locations across the state were being determined for pharmacy locations to sell medical marijuana. Lake Charles was one of those locations, although no permits had been given at that time.

Well that all has changed.  Yesterday, the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy granted the license to Medicis in Lake Charles.

The Board granted marijuana pharmacy permits in five of the nine health regions across the state.

Here's a little background on the matter:  In 2015 and 2016, the Louisiana Legislature authorized a highly-regulated medical marijuana program. Under the new "Green Laws", the LSU and Southern University agricultural centers are growing the plants to make medical products. The licensed pharmacies will dispense the marijuana in non-smokable forms.

Medicis, LLC will service the southwest region of Louisiana, which includes: Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron and Jeff Davis Parishes.

Other pharmacy companies that were considered for the Southwest region included:

  • Calcasieu Therapeutics, LLC
  • Clinical Pharmacy of SWLA, LLC
  • CarMed Direct, Inc. d/b/a The Dispensary of SWLA
  • Modern Medicine, LLC
