The New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson said Friday that the Saints and their start Quarterback Drew Brees are close to a deal that will keep Brees in New Orleans.

Even though it is reported that a deal is close, reports say that Drew Brees will not show up today for the teams voluntary without a new contract in hand.

ESPN is reporting:

Drew Brees, who reportedly won't report to the start of the New Orleans Saints' voluntary workouts without a new contract in hand, talked to Tom Benson on Friday morning and was "close" on a new deal, the owner said.

"I talked to Drew Brees this morning. ... He is due in next week. We're close," Benson said during a news conference announcing his purchase of the NBA's New Orleans Hornets.

But Brees has said he does not want to play under the franchise tag, which amounts to a one-year deal with no long-term security in the case of an injury.

The Saints begin voluntary organized workouts on Monday, and Brees will not attend without a renewed deal, a source close to Brees said, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
