As you well know Louisiana, Texas and surrounding states had and still have standing water and massive flooding to the recent Sabine River flood.  Yet many citizens affected by the flood have not registered to get assistance with FEMA yet.  The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury reports area residents with flood damage are encouraged to take sign-up with FEMA for assistance.  Below is a list of steps needed to apply for aid:

  • The FEMA registration hotline for flood victims is 1-800-621 FEMA or log on to www.disasterassistance.gov. Residents will need to provide a phone number where they can be reached, a Social Security number, the address of the damaged property, a description of damages and insurance information at the time of the call or register online.
  • If you haven't done so yet, you may begin placing flood debris along roadsides for pickup.  Citizens are encouraged to take photographs and document all damaged items for process by FEMA and/or insurance adjusters.

Flood debris items should be separated as follows:

1.    Construction Debris (building materials, lumber, carpet, furniture, drywall, mattresses)
2.      Vegetative Debris (trees, leaves, logs)
3.      Household Hazardous Material (oils, batteries, pesticides, paints)
4.      White Goods (refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers)
5.      Electronics (computers, televisions)
  • The Parish Division of Planning and Development has made special arrangements to allow expedited electrical permits for those affected by the floods.  Residents needing re-connections may call the permit office at (337) 721-3610.  Permits may be applied for by phone and for a limited time fees have been waived for flood-damaged residences. Residents may also apply in person at 901 Lakeshore Drive in Lake Charles.
  • The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals - Office of Public Health (DHH-OPH) will not require any inspections or permits to be conducted or obtained prior to having electrical service restored.  This specifically for structures that had electrical service up to the day of the March 2016 flood.
