Monday, January 25, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, "It's important that our notes, our money...reflect the history and diversity of our country."

Psaki explained the Biden administration is picking up efforts to have slavery abolitionist, Harriet Tubman, placed on the $20 bill. The legendary heroine would replace the nation's seventh president, Andrew Jackson (a slave owner) and become the second woman in the history of our country to be honored on U.S. currency.

The initiative was set in motion by Obama administration Treasury Secretary Jack Lew in 2016. However, upon taking office, former President Donald Trump delayed the effort. Trump Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced they would redesign the $10 and $50 bills instead to improve security and thwart counterfeiters. This week, Psaki said President Biden's Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the first woman in the history of the office, will accelerate efforts to make the Tubman initiative come to pass.
