For thirteen years now, Downtown at Sundown has given Lake Charles a reason to celebrate the diverse culture and local businesses of downtown, and the 2011 season is fast approaching! The City of Lake Charles and the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana are proud to announce this year’s band line up to get residents and visitors to the area excited about experiencing downtown Lake Charles and the many musicians, ar...tists, and restaurants that make up Southwest Louisiana culture. For four consecutive Fridays from May 13th to June 3rd, Downtown at Sundown will showcase the finest in local art, music, and food.

On Friday, May 13th, Downtown at Sundown will officially open its season with the 2011 Grammy winner Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. Chubby Carrier’s music has been described as pure Louisiana zydeco fun with a fiery passion blowing through Carrier’s accordion skills. Raised in a strong infused zydeco family, Carrier has toured worldwide with the Bayou Swamp Band for 22 years and continues to ignite audiences at every performance. While his music is rooted in traditional zydeco, Carrier blends together contemporary songs and styles with his zydeco rhythms to generate new sounds that bridge the gap between Cajun music and a global audience. His album Zydeco Junkie gained him critically-acclaimed recognition as well as a nomination for a Grammy, and the first-time nominee swept away the competition and was awarded a Grammy just months ago.

Downtown at Sundown will feature not only great live music but also children’s activities, food from downtown restaurants, table top art galleries, and art and crafts sales. Events such as Downtown at Sundown help to establish downtown Lake Charles as a thriving urban community that offers something exciting for its residents, businesses, and visitors. Corporate sponsors have made it possible for an estimated 2000 attendees each week to gather and enjoy the family-friendly event. The American Press, CITGO, Business First Bank, Entergy, and Global Industries have helped us to continue giving Southwest Louisiana a free concert series while promoting our culture.

Downtown at Sundown is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Downtown Merchants’ parking lot on the corner of Broad Street and Ryan Street and is free to the public. No ice chests allowed.
