Poetry is an art and I have been a fan of the art of poetry for all of my life. There are obviously variations of poetry, as there are rappers who are some great poets including Common, Rapsody, and Queen Latifah who have shown their craft and talent for years.

There are Poetry slams that have given us some talented individuals and have made many people a lot of money. The Arts and Humanities Council of SWLA is hosting an Annual Poetry Out Loud Competition this Saturday, February 12 at 10 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and will take place on the third floor of Historic City Hall/ This event will host High School students who will recite poetry and will compete to move to the State Finals on March 3, that will be held virtually.

The winners for the State Finals will be announced and moved to the National Finals which will be held virtually later this year. The students will have the chance to win college scholarships and various other prizes for their achievements.

Poetry Out Loud began in 2005 and is a great way to challenge high school students and coach them into studying and memorizing poetry in a competitive setting. There have been many winners and personally, I feel it gives the kids something to look forward to.
