Sorry, No Tax-Free Weekend for Back to School Shopping This Year
Thanks to the Louisiana state legislature, the Bayou State will go the next seven years without a tax-free weekend of any sort.
The "Back-to-School" tax-free holiday weekend was supposed to begin this Friday, August 3rd, but it won't be happening this year due to a "mistake" made by the state legislature.
Apparently in a rush to agree on the state budget, legislators also signed off on discontinuing the three sales tax holidays previously offered by the state each year - only they didn't realize what they were doing at the time.
"We thought the sales tax holidays were still in there," Jack McFarland, R-Jonesboro, told The Advocate.
The three sales tax holidays that have been discontinued are:
- Annual Louisiana Sales Tax Holiday - August 3-4
- Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday - September 7-9
- Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday - May 25-26
If nothing changes, Louisiana won't see another sales tax holiday until 2025.
(Texas is still having its tax-free holiday next weekend (August 10-12, 2018), so you could always head over to the Lone Star state if you're looking to save some back-to-school cash.)
