LAFAYETTE, La. – A former assistant principal at Comeaux High School and Breaux Bridge High School has been arrested in connection with a sex crime, prompting concern from local parents.

According to Lafayette Police, 47-year-old James Cork was arrested early Saturday morning on an active warrant for sexual battery. A KATC report says police confirmed the accusation is "not related to a juvenile" and "did not involve school property or activities."

Cork most recently served as an assistant principal at Comeaux High School. Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) officials say he was placed on administrative leave on February 13, 2025, for reasons unrelated to his recent arrest. He officially resigned from LPSS on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Prior to his time in Lafayette Parish, Cork worked as an assistant principal at Breaux Bridge High School in St. Martin Parish from August 2021 through December 2023. According to officials there, he resigned to take a role in another parish.

In the wake of the arrest, some Lafayette Parish parents took to social media to express concern over a recent pattern of troubling news tied to school employees. One parent posting in the “Concerned Parents of Lafayette Parish Students” Facebook group wrote:

“So, I just saw that an AP from Comeaux was arrested for sexual battery. This is the third incident at LPSS coming to light in a short period of time. Getting a bit concerned.”

We reached out to LPSS Director of Communications Tracy Wirtz for additional information. Wirtz responded that the district has no further comment at this time, noting the arrest and charges are not related to Lafayette Parish Schools.

This story will be updated if more details become available. More details are available via reports from KLFY and KATC.
