As the Fourth of July celebrations continue, Louisiana officials are urging residents to prioritize safety when handling fireworks.

In a recent tweet, the Louisiana office of the state fire marshal shared vital information regarding the most injured body parts due to fireworks accidents, highlighting the importance of caution during these festive occasions.

The tweet emphasized that the safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending professional shows. Consumer use of fireworks has become increasingly popular during holidays like New Year's Eve and Independence Day. However, it is crucial to understand that fireworks are not safe for consumers, as they can lead to thousands of injuries each year.

According to the Louisiana Fire Marshal's tweet, burns account for over 38% of fireworks-related injuries. Annually, fireworks spark more than 19,500 reported fires, further underscoring the potential dangers associated with their use.

When it comes to injuries, statistics from emergency rooms reveal alarming trends. Approximately 44% of the 9,100 injuries treated in emergency rooms during the month surrounding July 4th are burns. Of the injuries seen at these facilities, 50% affected the extremities, such as the hand, finger, or leg. Another third of injuries were sustained by the eyes or other parts of the head, accounting for 16% and 19%, respectively. The remaining injuries affected the arm, trunk, or other body parts, amounting to 5% and 12% respectively.

It is especially concerning that children aged 10-14 have the highest rate of fireworks injuries, with more than one-third (36%) of the victims under the age of 15. Contrary to popular belief, even seemingly harmless sparklers contribute significantly to emergency room visits, accounting for approximately 25% of fireworks-related injuries.

With these statistics in mind, officials urge everyone to prioritize safety during fireworks celebrations. The Louisiana office of the state fire marshal recommends attending professional shows rather than handling fireworks personally. By doing so, individuals can minimize the risk of injuries and fires associated with consumer use of fireworks.

As the Fourth of July festivities draw near, it is essential for everyone to stay informed about the potential hazards posed by fireworks. By spreading awareness and adopting responsible practices, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for all.
