On an extremely hot summer day, you've decided to venture out of the comfort of your cool air-conditioned home for a quick trip to Brookshire's or Walgreens or to Longview Mall to do a little shopping.

Why Your Car Takes Forever to Cool Down

You get in your vehicle and say, 'Oh [insert your favorite four-letter word], it's hot in here. ' And if you have leather seats and sit in them, you may be saying more than that.

After the shock of the heat hitting you in the face and your legs sticking to that boiling seat, you start your vehicle and crank that air conditioner to as low as it'll go to cool off as fast as it can.

Most modern cars are equipped with a little button that will recirculate the air that is being cooled back through your ventilation system, cooling it off much faster.

Here’s What That Symbol Does

Look for this little button or symbol located next to your AC controls and press it to turn it on.

On days when it’s 93°, but feels like 102° thanks to the humidity, this little button will be a lifesaver to you.

Most people already know about this button, especially if they have a hot-natured companion or a pregnant wife! For those of you who are unaware of this button and its function, you're welcome!

When it's on, you're recirculating the air within the cabin of your vehicle instead of pulling in fresh air. Recirculating the cooler air is much easier to cool down than a lot of new, fresh hot air passing through your car.

Bonus: Reducing Pollutants in Heavy Traffic

According to Chris Moses' Facebook post, he says you can also cut down on the pollutants and carbon monoxide entering your vehicle by 20% when you use this mode, especially when you're stuck in traffic. I have no scientific data backing this up, though, it would seem to make sense.
