(Mix 93-1) A major home furnishings retailer has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will close stores to cut costs. Will any of the closures affect stores in East Texas?

The home furnishings retailer, At Home, offers a wide range of home decor items, including bedding, lamps, kitchenware, rugs, chairs, pictures, towels, accessories, and candles. It also sells outdoor furniture for patio and lawn, as well as indoor and outdoor seasonal decorations for Halloween, Christmas, and other seasons.

Are Texas Stores Affected?

The company operates around 260 stores throughout 40 states. At Home has a location in Tyler, several around the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and one in Shreveport.  At this time, these locations will remain open as normal.

Why At Home Filed for Bankruptcy

At Home, based in Coppell, Texas, announced it filed for bankruptcy protection in June, hoping to eliminate $2 billion in debt while securing new funding and restructuring the company. According to USA Today, the company cites rising interest rates, "persistent inflation," and a growing concern over unsustainable costs from increased tariffs.

The Bigger Retail Struggle

It is still a tough time for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, especially with the uncertainty of tariffs. This news follows recent announcements and closures of brands like JoAnn Fabrics, Party City, Big Lots, and the closures of some stores from Kohl's, JCPenney, and Macy's.
