Is This The Biggest Mardi Gras Grand Marshal in Shreveport History? Physically, yes. Because Robert Parish to lead the Krewe of Centaur in 2026 as Grand Marshal.

This is massive news for Mardi Gras season in the Ark-La-Tex. While the season is always a huge deal, the Krewe of Centaur just dropped a bombshell announcement for 2026, naming their Grand Marshal for the parade. He's not just some celebrity...it's one of Shreveport's greatest, a real GoAT. We're talking about the legend himself, Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame member and NBA legend, Robert Parish.

Why This is Such A Huge Deal for Shreveport

The Krewe of Centaur is the largest Mardi Gras Krewe in North Louisiana, boasting over 750 members. It's a massive part of our local culture and a huge driver for good, family-friendly fun in the city. Adding Parish as Grand Marshal is just a perfect move.

It highlights Shreveport's incredible sports history, and celebrates one of the most successful athletes to ever come out of the city, on one of the grandest stages Shreveport has to offer.

Robert Parish is Pure Shreveport...Literally

Long before he was known as The Chief in the NBA, Robert Parish was a dominant force right here. His foundation was laid at Woodlawn High School where he was named an All-American, All-State, All-District, and All-City player back in 1972. That same year, he famously led the Woodlawn team to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class AAAA state championship.

For college he didn't leave town...he stayed right here to play for Centenary College. He led the Gents from 1972 to 1976, where he really exploded onto the national scene.

The 7-foot-1 center was unstoppable, finishing his collegiate career as Centenary's all-time leading scorer. His senior season was just ridiculous...he averaged 24.4 points and a nation-leading 18 rebounds per game. He will be forever remembered as the greatest basketball player in Centenary history, as his face is now featured on the outside of the Gold Dome.

From Shreveport to NBA Hall of Famer

After college, the NBA came calling. Parish was drafted 8th overall in the 1976 NBA Draft and began a professional career that lasted an unbelievable 21 years. He was originally drafted by the Golden State Warriors, but that's not the jersey he will always be immortalized in.

Most fans, especially those of us who watched 80s basketball, remember him from those legendary Boston Celtics teams. He, Larry Bird, and Kevin McHale formed one of the greatest frontcourts in the history of the sport. Parish wasn't just along for the ride...he was a cornerstone. He won four NBA Championships, three of them with Boston and one with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls.

The list of his achievements is just insane. He was a 9-time NBA All-Star and a 2-time All-NBA selection. His #00 jersey is hanging in the rafters in Boston, an honor reserved for the absolute best.

But here's the stat that always blows my mind...Parish is the NBA’s all-time leader in games played, with 1,611. Let that sink in...nobody has played more NBA games. He also racked up over 23,000 career points and 14,000 rebounds.

He was named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary All-Time Teams. In 2003, he was rightly inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This is the level of greatness we're talking about.

When Can You See The Chief as Grand Marshal in Shreveport?

This is the important part...mark your calendars now. The Krewe of Centaur parade is scheduled to roll on Saturday, February 7, 2026. This is going to be one for the books. You can also see the Grand Marshal join the Krewe for their Grand Bal on Saturday, January 24th at the Shreveport Convention Center.

It's also perfect timing. Parish has a new memoir called The Chief set to be released in March 2026. The book will share his entire extraordinary life story, starting right here in Shreveport.

This is just a flat-out awesome move by the Krewe of Centaur. It’s a great way to kick off the 2026 Mardi Gras season and honor a true Shreveport icon. We can't wait to see The Chief leading the parade. It's going to be a huge day for the entire city.
