Big changes are happening this week in Louisiana for SNAP recipients. Beginning Wednesday, February 18 Louisiana is implementing strict USDA-approved SNAP food restrictions to ban the purchase of soft drinks, energy drinks, and candy using EBT cards.

How Many Products Will Now Be Banned

These new restrictions cover more than 25,000 products, including sugared drinks and candy. The goal is to promote healthier, more nutritional foods. But remember, you can still use cash to buy whatever items you want.

Here are the Items Banned from SNAP:

Soft Drinks: Any carbonated beverage with high-fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners (e.g., soda).
Energy Drinks: Drinks with added stimulants like taurine, guarana, or caffeine (e.g., Red Bull, Monster).
Candy: Sugar-based, chocolate, or fruit-based candy/sweets.
Juice: Fruit or vegetable drinks with less than 50% natural juice.

SNAP recipients can continue to buy many other items including

Fruits and vegetables
Meats, poultry, and fish
Dairy products like milk and cheese
Breads, cereals, and grains
Seeds and plants for growing food at home

Why the SNAP Changes Were Made

The reason Louisiana made the change is to encourage healthier choices and help reduce obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other diet-related health issues across the state. Health officials also encourage residents to shop at places like farmers’ markets that accept SNAP.
