We are moving into the really hot part of the summer and lots of folks like to find a good swimming hole to take a dip to cool off. But you have to be really careful about picking a spot for swimming in Louisiana.
I grew up not far from one of the largest rivers in the world (the Mississippi) and it is well know that you should not even think about trying to swim in that river. It's very dangerous and fast moving. It also has some deadly undertows. Let's not even get started on the water quality and all the debris you might find floating on the mighty Mississippi.
But that's not the only river in Louisiana that can be very dangerous for swimmers.
You might remember the tragedy back in 2010 when 6 members of a Shreveport family lost their lives during an outing on the Red River. All of these folks were young and just starting out in life. It was one of our communities greatest tragedies, ever.

I know if can be fun to swim in natural waters like lakes and rivers, but you need to know the dangers ahead of time. Several rivers pose serious risks to swimmers because of pollution, wild animals and hazardous currents.

The rivers in the Bayou State are tempting, but you really need to know what you are facing. Treacherous currents can overpower even the best swimmers. And if you jump in a river infested with alligators, you might not survive. Know the risks before you take the plunge.
