The Hertz Investment Group (HIG), the owner of the 41-year-old building, had estimated the renovation would cost over $150 million. The tower was built in 1981 and is 22 stories tall.

This is a bittersweet story for SWLA residents. For so long it was an icon in the sky that symbolized Lake Charles. It was the first thing you noticed when crossing over the Calcasieu River bridge. I remember driving past it as a kid and marveling at how gigantic the building was to me.

On the other hand, it reminds us every day of the utter destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Laura.

The City of Lake Charles says the implosion will bring the building down to around six to four stories. The rest of the demolition will take about 90 days to complete.

A safety zone has been established around the implosion site and the roads in the zone will be closed down for hours after the implosion. See the map below:

The implosion of the former Capital One Tower will take place Saturday, September 7.

The private owner of the former Capital One Tower has hired Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition to serve as the general contractor for their demolition project. Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition has subcontracted with Controlled Demolition, Inc. to handle the implosion of the 21-story tower.
