Let’s be honest, getting stuck behind a slow driver in the left lane is just plain annoying. Doing this on the interstate is even more frustrating. You're trying to get somewhere, and instead, you’re tapping the brakes behind someone who won’t move over.

SLOW LEFT LANE DRIVERS COULD BE FINED IN LOUISIANA

The left lane is meant for passing, not for Sunday drives. Lawmakers say slow drivers in the fast lane cause backups, road rage, and more accidents. They’re hoping this law helps ease some of that frustration.

Starting August 1, a new Louisiana law will punish drivers who go too slow in the passing lane with bigger fines and possibly even jail time.

Senate Bill 11, pushed by Sen. Jay Luneau, makes it easier for law enforcement to ticket drivers who camp out in the left lane without actually passing anyone. Under the old rule, you had to be going at least 10 miles under the speed limit to get pulled over. But now? Even just one mile under could land you a ticket if you’re holding up traffic.

WHAT COULD FINES LOOK LIKE?

  • First offense: $150
  • Second offense (within a year): $250
  • Third time: $350, and maybe 30 days in jail

So, if you’re not passing, stay to the right. Starting in August, the left lane will be no place to take it slow, unless you want to pay the price.
