[KNGT-FM] Usually, when you see a headline like the one above, you start thinking, 'Is there a holiday coming up that I didn't realize?' Well, yes, there are boys and girls. If you didn't know, Juneteenth is coming up this Thursday, and it's a national holiday.
Juneteenth commemorates the date in 1885 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that people who were slaves were finally freed. This event took place approximately two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a day that celebrates freedom and the end of slavery.
In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, which means this Thursday, the United States Post Office, Most major banks, and the stock market will be closed. Locally, federal and local offices will also be closed, such as Lake Charles City Hall.
