With a lot of people in Southwest Louisiana enjoying the outdoors and the waterways here, it is key to have the skills and safety knowledge when doing it. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office just announced some safety classes that boaters can take for free.

Lake Charles –

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will be conducting two boating education courses in the near future. The classes are free of charge and are open to any member of the public, age 10 and up.

Louisiana law requires all persons born after January 1, 1984 to complete a NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) approved boating education course to operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower, and carry proof of such, when navigating on state waters.

The classes will be conducted at the following locations and dates:

· Tuesday, February 22

o Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office West Cal Law Enforcement Center

1525 Cypress Street, Sulphur

8:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m. (Lunch on your own from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.)

· Saturday, March 5

o Calcasieu Regional Law Enforcement Academy

3958 Mallard Cove Dr., Lake Charles

8:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m. (Lunch on your own from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.)

Please pre-register for all classes by calling the Sheriff’s Office at 491-3715. Be sure to include which session you would like to attend. If you have any questions or for more information, please call the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Marine Division at 491-3614.

With Spring and Summer heading our way, its time to get prepared and be safe on our waters ways not only for your safety but for the safety of others.
