KATC recently reported that Louisiana's medicinal marijuana legislation is expanding, to include a smokable form called Flower. In June Governor John Bel Edwards signed a measure into law making this new therapeutic cannabis legal starting January 1, 2022.

In Louisiana, Ilera Holistic Healthcare is the contract grower and manufacturer of medical marijuana and located at Southern University. Dr. Chanda Macias is the CEO of the holistic healthcare center and said the natural medicinal benefits of cannabis are vastly untapped. Dr. Macias explained the background research of Flower saying, "A lot of thorough work and research and intentionality had to go into producing a flower market because of the negative connotation of cannabis in itself. Education and emerging research show the benefits for patients." The doctor also shared promising research shows medical marijuana may be a valuable weapon to help fight addiction in the future. That is certainly good news beings that thousands die from overdoses every year.
