A sixty year old man was struck while walking in the outside lane of I-10. A State Police Troop D investigation determined why the man was walking away fro another crash when he was struck.

According to the Troop D press release  61-year-old Timothy Johnson of Sulphur was walking in the outside lane of travel on I-10. He was walking away from his car that he had driven into the trees about a half mile away. The vehicle was in the trees about 4 miles west of Sulphuir and Johnson was struck about three and a half miles west of Sulphur. State police responded to the vehicle in the trees at 2:47 and the pedestrian accident at 3:06 A.M. on September 3rd.

Johnson was struck by a 2001 Buick driven by 30-year-old Jana R. Doyle of Starks.  Doyle swerved in an attempt to avoid Johnson but was unsuccessful.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.  Doyle was wearing her seatbelt and was not injured nor charged in the incident..  Impairment on the part of Johnson is suspected to be a factor in the crash.  Toxicology samples were obtained from Johnson and Doyle and will be submitted for analysis.  The crash remains under investigation.
