Work has just about been completed on the Charles Kuehn weight room within McNeese State's new Jack Doland field house and equipment is expected to begin being placed next week.

Zeb Hawkins, the university's strength and conditioning coach, said that the room will be second in size in the state only to that of LSU.

“It's over 8,000 square feet,” he added, noting that it is the largest among schools in the Southland Conference and could be the largest among members in the FCS.

Life Fitness Company and Hammer Strength Company are outfitting the room and are making it a showcase weight facility.

“They are custom painting the weights in platinum and blue,” Hawkins said.

There will be 16 Mondo enlayed platforms for the heavy weight work and only six to eight schools in the nation have this.

The weight room will also include: 16 multi-purpose racks, 80,000 pounds of weights (McNeese logo on the weights), nine 52 inch flat screen television sets, mirrors all the way around, two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a stationary bike and a $12,000 surround sound system donated by Scott Bailey and Bailey Audio.

There will also be a 12 foot McNeese logo in the center of the room.

“With this size of a room we will be able to accommodate up to 50 athletes at a time without crowding,” said Hawkins, noting that every sports program at the university will use the facility.

“It's going to be a great addition to our athletic program,” he added.

The weight room will open when the field house has been completed and accepted by the university which is expected to be sometime in July.
