The McNeese Cowboys football team have just returned back from Nebraska where they nearly pulled out a big victory over the Cornhuskers and shock the nation.  With that being said, they were still rewarded for their efforts in this weeks newly released polls.

Even though the Cowboys lost the game by 7 points,  McNeese moved up one spot to #6 in this week’s Sports Network Top 25 poll while staying put at # 6 in the FCS Coaches poll.

McNeese senior free safety Aaron Sam has been named this week’s Southland Conference and Louisiana Defensive Player of the Week after his stellar performance in Saturday’s 31-24 last second loss to Nebraska.

The Lake Charles native tied a school record with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter of the game to tie the score at 14-14. He later broke up a pass on a third-and-long late in the fourth quarter as the Cowboys drove down to kick a tying field goal on the ensuing possession.

Sam finished with a team-high seven tackles with five of those solo stops.
