LSU Take Over No. 1 Ranking in AP; No. 2 in Coaches’ Poll
The LSU Tigers haven't been ranked number one since January of 2008 after they beat Ohio State to win the national championship of college football.
But after LSU dismantled West Virginia last night 47-21, they take over the #1 ranking in college football.
After completing a brutal September schedule that included three road wins against ranked opponents, the LSU football team (4-0, 1-0 SEC) moved to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday.
The Tigers also moved into a tie for No. 2 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
LSU jumped No. 1 Oklahoma into the top spot in the writers' poll, as the Tigers earned 42 of 60 first-place votes. The Sooners were No. 2, followed by Alabama, Boise State and Oklahoma State.
LSU was last ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 in January of 2008 after winning the 2007 BCS National Championship game against Ohio State.
After flip-flopping with SEC rival Alabama in the opening weeks of the coaches' poll, the schools were tied in the week 4 poll.
The Tigers received 20 of 59 first-place votes from the coaches, while No. 1 Oklahoma held the top spot with 32. Alabama had seven first-place votes after a home victory over Arkansas on Saturday.
On Saturday night, LSU opened a 13-0 lead at West Virginia and scored the game's final 20 points to beat the then-16th ranked Mountaineers, 47-21.
The victory came on the heels of a 19-6 Thursday night win at then-No. 25 Mississippi State and a season-opening victory over No. 2 Oregon in the Cowboys Classic.
LSU returns to Tiger Stadium on Saturday when the Tigers welcome Kentucky for an 11:21 a.m. CT kickoff on the SEC Network.
