DOWNTOWN AT SUNDOWN’S 2011 SEASON KICKS OFF ON MAY 13TH

For thirteen years now, Downtown at Sundown has given Lake Charles a reason to celebrate the diverse culture and local businesses of downtown, and its 2011 season is fast approaching! The City of Lake Charles and the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana are proud to announce this year’s band line up to get residents and visitors excited about re-experiencing downtown Lake Charles. For four consecutive Fridays from May 13th to June 3rd, Downtown at Sundown will showcase the finest in regional art, music, and food.

The concert series will officially launch on Friday, May 13th, with the 2011 Grammy winner for best zydeco album, Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, which will be sure to ignite the stage with traditional zydeco music infused with contemporary sounds and styles. Top Flight, the United State Air Force Rock Band, will continue the series on Friday, May 20th, and it is made up of several active duty Air Force men and women who travel to overseas military bases to boost morale with their rock performances. The tropical sounds of Kelly McGuire, who has been described as “the Jimmy Buffett of the Gulf Coast,” will hit the stage on Friday, May 27th, for Memorial Day weekend. His album King of the Island was named Best Album of the Year by the Texas Music Awards. City Heat will return to the Downtown at Sundown stage to close the concert series with a bang on Friday, June 3rd. What began as a casino house band, City Heat has quickly become one of Southwest Louisiana’s most loved bands.

Downtown at Sundown will feature not only great live music by regional bands but also children’s activities, food from downtown restaurants, table top art galleries, and arts and craft sales. Matt Young, Executive Director of the Arts Council, stated, “Events such as Downtown at Sundown help to establish downtown Lake Charles as a thriving urban community that offers something exciting for its residents, businesses, and visitors.” The American Press, CITGO, Business First Bank, Entergy, and Global Industries have made it possible for an estimated 2,000 attendees each week to gather and enjoy the free and family-friendly event.

Downtown at Sundown is held at the Downtown Merchants’ parking lot on the corner of Broad Street and Ryan Street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on each Friday and is free to the public. All beverage sales go to benefit the Arts Council which supports and promotes Southwest Louisiana arts and cultural organizations. No ice chests are allowed, and guests are welcome to bring chairs.
