Lake Charles, LA March 23, 2011 - Someone is posing as CSE Federal Credit Union in a phishing attempt to get personal and confidential information from people. The fraudulent attempts are targeting cell phones and are coming in the form of text messages and phone calls. These messages are not originating from CSE Federal Credit Union and CSE Federal Credit Union is not trying to obtain such information from people in the area. CSE Federal Credit Union does not and will not contact members or non-members to obtain personal and confidential financial information by email or text messaging. Phishing is an attempt to acquire sensitive personal and confidential information such as account numbers, passwords or debit card information by masquerading as a trustworthy entity such as CSE Federal Credit Union.

Phishing is typically carried out by email or text messaging and directs potential victims to enter information at a fake website that looks and feels almost identical to the legitimate one. Again, CSE Federal Credit Union is not originating these attempts to acquire information and has reported the activity to mobile phone service providers and authorities in an effort to track down the perpetrators.

CSE is asking people who are receiving these fraudulent messages to contact their phone service providers to report the fraudulent activity and try to block calls and messages to their cell phones from that source.

So stay on your toes and don't give out any personal info to anyone via a text message or over the phone.
