Abbeville police acting on a tip from a concerned citizen have arrested 9 people in connection with an illegal cockfighting operation in that Vermilion Parish city. Officers said they received information about the middle of May that there was cockfighting happening at a residence in the city. Officers set up surveillance and witnessed what appeared to be illegal cockfights, wagering, and alcohol sales.

According to Detective Leland Laseter this is what the officers observed when they were first notified.

They saw two roosters fighting inside a ring and people waving money in the air as if they were betting on the fight

Laseter's comments were reported in a story published by the Louisiana Radio Network. He went on to say that once officers moved in for a closer look at the facility, located in the 200 block of Gertrude Street, even more evidence of illegal cockfighting was uncovered.

Equipment for sharpening spurs, which are put on roosters feet to fight. They found wrist bands that were put on the people for admission.

Detectives also noticed feathers, wounded roosters, and other items that are usually associated with cock fights. It was also noted that detectives observed an underage juvenile daughter of one of the suspects was serving and selling alcohol to those in attendance.

Search warrants were executed yesterday and 9 people were arrested and charged.
