After a tip from another student, on the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 6, school officials at Barbe High School notified the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Safe School Deputy that a student "may be in possession of a firearm."

According to a media release, after questioning the 15-year-old boy, the deputy, and a school administrator learned he possessed a firearm. Through further investigation, they learned the student took the firearm from a CPSO deputy, who is a family friend, but without his knowledge. The juvenile was arrested.

“We work hand in hand with the Calcasieu Parish School Board on a daily basis to ensure our students’ safety which is our ultimate goal,” stated Calcasieu Sheriff Tony Mancuso. “I want to applaud the student who reported the possibility of a gun being on campus. As hard as it may seem to a student to turn in another student, it is imperative, and it is your responsibility, for the safety of everyone at the school. If you see something, say something.”

An internal investigation is being conducted into how the juvenile was able to obtain the firearm.
