Coach Payton Tops Forbes Highest Paid Coaches List
Move over Mr Spygate (Bill Bilichick) ... Forbes Magazine says you are not the highest paid coach anymore. The New Orleans Saints now take the title in highest paid player and coach. Tom Benson is writing dem checks.
Sean Payton's new five year deal with the New Orleans Saints puts him at $8 million a year and that makes him number one according to Forbes. NFL coaches take eight of the top ten spots in the America's Best Paid Sports Coaches list. The top ten coaches on the list have collected 13 championship titles. The average coach on the list made $7 million annually.
The Saints also have the NFL's highest paid player in Drew Brees. The six time Pro Bowler and record setting quarterback will make $20 million per season for the next five years. The Saints have opened the checkbook hoping for more Superbowls. We all hope it works out that way.
The average coach on our list makes nearly $7 million a year, up from the $6.45 million average salary of last year’s list. Winning is obviously a key component to earning a top salary, and the ten coaches on our list have collected 13 titles over their careers as pro coaches. Two list members without championship rings are rookie coach Kelly and Seattle’s Pete Carroll, both of whom proved their value at the college level.
